Le opere di William Shakespeare ci sono pervenute attraverso due vie principali: il First Folio e gli in-quarto. Le locuzioni in-folio e in-quarto sono utilizzate per descrivere la dimensione delle pagine che compongono il codice/libro (il sito della Treccani offre una descrizione di facile comprensione).
Il First Folio è un’edizione del 1623 curata da due colleghi attori di William Shakespeare e contiene 36 opere (frontespizio nell’immagine qui in alto). Si tratta di una pubblicazione postuma, tuttavia considerata più attendibile. Quando il bardo era ancora in vita, a circolare erano invece gli in-quarto, edizioni per lo più non autorizzate.
